Michael Barkann’s ubiquitous voice comes to TUTV on a new episode of the Philly Famous Podcast television show. The notable Philly sports broadcasting figure discusses his new blue glasses, tells stories from on the job, and describes the skills he’s honed over his long career, and more with host Greg Holdsman. As a host and anchor for NBC Sports, former one half of the Mike and Ike Show, and a five-time Emmy Award winner, Mike has a lot of advice and insight to share with future broadcasters.

Host Greg Holdsman has been highlighting local visionaries and vanguards with his Philly Famous Podcast for over a year, and has now brought the program to TV by taping his podcast interviews.

Kal and Lucille Rudman are celebrated on TUTV this Wednesday

Temple University’s Klein College of Media and Communication announced a $1.5 million gift from Kal and Lucille Rudman in October of this year and held a celebration in honor of the Rudmans later that month. Join TUTV in recognition of this generous gift and watch the gift celebration dinner when it airs this Wednesday, December 12 at 1 and 9 p.m.

The gift, made in the form of a five-year pledge, will support future projects at the station, including student coverage of the Tokyo Olympics in 2020, a full slate of student-produced news, sports and entertainment programming, as well as the opportunity to expand to new, state-of-the-art facilities.

Author discusses new research on the gender pay gap

‘The Cost of Being a Girl,’ by Yasemin Besen-Cassino

Montclair State University Sociology Professor Yasemin Besen-Cassino discusses her new book, The Cost of Being a Girl, which explores the roots and effects of the gender pay gap–that roughly 20 cent-per-dollar distance between men’s and women’s earnings–on TUTV this Thursday.

Her research, recently published by Temple University Press, reveals how surprisingly early the wage gap starts and how much teenage work experience affects adult careers. By centering on girls and young women, Besen-Cassino filtered out factors that comes into play in peak earning years, such as childbearing and household responsibilities. It has been praised by Publishers Weekly and London School of Economics Review and was featured in the Washington Postthe Guardian, MTV, CNN, and the Philadelphia Inquirer, among many others.

Philly Famous Podcast comes to TUTV

Greg Holdsman, a Philadelphia native and senior at Temple, has been highlighting local visionaries and vanguards with his Philly Famous Podcast for over a year, recording more than 70 episodes. Now, Greg is bringing his audio program to TV by taping his podcast episodes, which will air on TUTV. The premiere episode features Temple Basketball Assistant Coach Aaron McKie, who played basketball for Temple and the Sixers and will succeed Fran Dunphy as Temple’s Head Coach in 2019. McKie reflects on his career and talks about Coach Ellerbee at Simon Gratz High School, Coach Chaney at Temple, and Coach Larry Brown at the Sixers, discussing his relationship with each and how they have impacted his coaching style as he prepares to take the reigns from Coach Dunphy.

Bouncing Back Empath

In a new episode of Bouncing Back premiering Monday, Lisa Bien learns about what it’s like being an ’empath’–a person with highly developed empathic abilities who is able to psychologically tune into the feelings felt by the people around them. Though this ability can be an asset, it is also a challenge to manage one’s own emotions day to day with the constant imposition of other’s. Lisa speaks to Regan Tilton, who grew up labeled a ‘sensitive child’ and had difficulty as an adult trying to juggle her deep feelings.

Lisa and Regan discuss how highly sensitive people need structure to cope with day-to-day pressures. She also found other coping mechanisms to be helpful, including Reiki, meditation, enough sleep, a healthy diet and more.

Coach Geoff Collins appears on a new episode Baker Dave’s show to make his own recipe for keto key lime cheesecake. Collins went on the keto diet recently at the recommendation of his doctor and came to the set to share his healthier twist on a classic cheesecake, which substitutes a graham cracker crust with almond flour. Baker Dave and Coach Collins also discuss his peripatetic lifestyle as an athletics administrator, having moved 14 times in the past 23 years, and more.

NBC10 New Home

Old Friends in a New Home: The NBC10 Story gives background to NBC10’s move from their old studios in Bala Cynwyd to a new landmark facility located in the Comcast Technology Center.

The documentary, produced by TUTV, takes a stroll down memory lane all the way to the beginnings of NBC10 in 1948 as WCAU TV-10 in the PSFS building in Center City and their eventual move to City Ave in Bala Cynwyd where they have been for 50 years. Using archival footage and photos provided by Broadcast Pioneers of Philadelphia and Temple’s Special Collections Research Center, you’ll see photos of the studios through the years and clips from notable programming, accompanied by present day interviews with Jerry Blavat, Pete Kane and more.
