Host Rafael Logroño is joined by panelists Bibiana Correa, Luisa Suarez, and Melvin Saravia in a new episode of La Charla this week. The group discusses the awards season–including whether it was an appropriate choice for Jennifer Lopez to perform the Motown tribute at the Grammy’s this year–phone addiction, and the stress of responding to text messages, among other topics. The panelists also compete in a game of geography trivia.

Premiere of new program “Temple Pilots” airs Friday

A group of students recently organized to help fellow students produce new show ideas for TUTV.  With the help and support of TUTV, “Temple Pilots” delivers an array of interesting stories in the form of a series of pilots. Their first offering premieres this Friday on TUTV.

A pilot by Steven Aronow, Tyler Crystal and Jackson Kirchhoff, Elevated is about two struggling individuals who use each other to elevate themselves after meeting in an elevator. In this episode, Sam, a struggling music manager in Philadelphia, is on the verge of being fired if she continues to slack off on the job. Will she be able to pull her own weight and find the next big artist for her record company?

Mr. Big 5–the winningest coach in the Big 5 history–Fran Dunphy is stepping down as Head Coach of Temple Basketball at the end of the 2018-2019 season. But before the Temple community says goodbye, the team at OwlSports Update presents a special sendoff to the dedicated and longtime Philadelphia college basketball icon, premiering Thursday on TUTV.

Jimmy Freas takes us through Fran Dunphy’s career–spanning six decades from 1967 when he played for LaSalle, to 1989 when he became Head Coach at Penn, to 2006 when he came to Temple. Sarah Metts sits down with Coach Dunphy himself in a personal interview. Dick Jerardi, former Daily News writer and Philadelphia’s local basketball historian, joins Sarah at the desk to reflect on Fran’s legacy in Philadelphia and beyond. Adam Crognale has more on Dunphy’s involvement with Coaches vs. Cancer and how his impact cannot be counted in just wins and losses.

TUTV Student Project Showcase

Introducing TUTV Student Project Showcase, a new program featuring a collection of original comedy shorts written, acted and directed by Temple students, premiering this Wednesday on TUTV.

Project Showcase lampoons television and media, including a spoof of a TV informercial advertising a new sauce product called “Bauce Soss,” which features a review from revered “Sauce Critic” Xavier. A morning news program, a fashion talk show, and a reality dating show are also satirized.

A new season of The Vibe brings a new host to the table

The season premiere of TUTV’s The Vibe airs this week and features an introduction to new co-host Sydney Umezurike, a senior Media and Production major, who previously served as the organization spotlight correspondent. Sydney moderates this edition of Poppin’ Topics, and asks whether or not drug use is glorified in hip hop in a discussion with rapper and Professor of Geography and Urban Studies at Temple, Timothy Welbeck, and producer Cameron Clay. Later, Sydney visits Power 99 offices to conduct an interview with host Roxy Romeo, who discusses her Trini heritage and more. The episode is capped off with a performance by special musical guest Franky Hill.

Who is the new host of Temple Tonight?

New host of Temple Tonight

TUTV’s late-night talk show kicks off an all new season with an all new host this Thursday. Don’t miss the season 7 premiere, and find out who replaced Jimmy by tuning in online or to Comcast 50/Verizon 45 within city limits. Also featured are musical guest The KP Connection and Zach Fox and Omri Dorani, who discuss their experiences making their debut feature film How to Get Girls. Both wrote, directed and produced the film.

The 2019 season of Temple Tonight begins Saturday, March 2 at 3:30 and 11:30 p.m. on TUTV.

TUTV receives 8 IBS Awards nominations including Best Station

In addition to the 4 BEA Festival awards TUTV won earlier this week, we have also learned that our programs received eight nominations for the 2019 Intercollegiate Broadcasting System Awards, including the award for Best College TV Station, which we won at last year’s IBS Awards Ceremony.

A Broader View - Health and Wellness

A Broader View returns with a new episode this Tuesday focusing on health and wellness. TUTV’s public affairs talk show aims to demystify integrative therapies and treatments such as reiki, acupuncture and massage in the new episode, featuring guests Sharon Edelman, a reiki practitioner and licensed massage therapist, and Living Beyond Breast Cancer board member Lu Ann Cahn, who is also the Director for Career Services of Temple’s Klein College.

A Broader View is produced and hosted by Professor Karen M. Turner’s journalism class and seeks to explore the issues and events that shape our lives, providing a broader view of the big stories that people are talking about or should be talking about.

Temple Smash’s live show airs on TUTV Saturday

The latest season of TUTV’s sketch comedy variety show Temple SMASH was performed live at the Philly Improv Theater. Watch the hour-long premiere as it was performed in front of a live audience in Philadelphia. Tune in to TUTV this Saturday, February 23 at 5 p.m. and 1 a.m. on Comcast 50, Verizon 45 and online.

Temple Talk premieres in the new year with an extra jam-packed special Valentine’s themed show next week.

Featured guest Kenny Screven, make up maven and social media influencer, discusses his journey in make up and why “boys can be pretty too,” and then leads the hosts in a “3 Minute Makeup Challenge.” In a very special edition of the Student Spotlight segment, Temple’s Sarah Madaus visits the set to discuss her life as a student while also operating as the creator and editor-in-chief of Temple’s first women’s lifestyle magazine, Refine. The hosts also discuss the Grammys, 21 Savage’s deportation and more.

Temple students walked away with 4 national awards

TUTV student producers nabbed four awards in three categories at the 2019 BEA Festival of Media Arts Awards this week, including two Sports Anchor awards for Matt Bevenour and Alexa Ross, who was the only woman nominated in the category.

The Broadcast Education Association (BEA) is an international academic media organization, driving insights, excellence in media production, and career advancement for educators, students, and professionals. The BEA Festival of Media Arts is an international refereed exhibition of faculty creative activities and a national showcase for student work. The Festival provides a venue for exhibition of winning submissions, including recognition of project authors, through showcase and awards sessions held during BEA’s annual convention in Las Vegas. The Festival seeks to enhance and extend creative activities, teaching, and professional standards in broadcasting and other forms of electronically mediated communication.  Visit beafestival.org for more information.

Philly-born Chef Marc Vetri interviewed on TUTV

Award-winning chef and restauranteur Marc Vetri visits the set of Philly Famous Podcast to talk to host Greg Holdsman about his career and his approach to cooking.

Vetri, sporting a dyed green beard in support of the Eagles, just opened a restaurant in Las Vegas, Vetri Cucina Las Vegas after having sold his restaurant group, including Amis, Osteria, Alla Spina, Pizzeria Vetri, and LoSpiedo (now Bar Amis), to Urban Outfitters a few years ago. He emphasizes that he strives to exhibit the best in hospitality in his establishments, above just the food and the ambiance.

He also discusses the Vetri Foundation, which aims to provide children with positive fresh food experiences to promote health and counteract obesity through cooking classes and experimental programs.

Philadelphia Neighborhoods Fall 2018

Philadelphia Neighborhoods on TV, the television program from Temple’s Multimedia Urban Reporting Lab and companion to philadelphianeighborhoods.com, returns to TUTV with a look at all parts of the city.

Hosts Holly Martin and Asia Lambert present reports looking at how e-cigarettes are effecting youth in Philadelphia, how green space affects mental health especially in low income neighborhoods and how the opioid crisis combined with entrenched poverty is exacerbating homelessness, which has increased by 10% since 2017. Later, take a look inside the “Hermit’s Cave” in Wissahickon Valley Park, which has a storied past. Then, hear from Branden Pizarro who became a professional boxing champion while still in high school, and now owns a boxing gym with his father, which trains young local children to box.
