A Fran Farewell

Mr. Big 5–the winningest coach in the Big 5 history–Fran Dunphy is stepping down as Head Coach of Temple Basketball at the end of the 2018-2019 season. But before the Temple community says goodbye, the team at OwlSports Update presents a special sendoff to the dedicated and longtime Philadelphia college basketball icon, premiering Thursday on TUTV.

Jimmy Freas takes us through Fran Dunphy’s career–spanning six decades from 1967 when he played for LaSalle, to 1989 when he became Head Coach at Penn, to 2006 when he came to Temple. Sarah Metts sits down with Coach Dunphy himself in a personal interview. Dick Jerardi, former Daily News writer and Philadelphia’s local basketball historian, joins Sarah at the desk to reflect on Fran’s legacy in Philadelphia and beyond. Adam Crognale has more on Dunphy’s involvement with Coaches vs. Cancer and how his impact cannot be counted in just wins and losses. Plus, an interview from 2009 by former Temple students called “Get Comfy with Dunphy”, and hear from former players and rival coaches on what sets Coach Dunphy apart from the rest.
