TUTV received 12 nominations for the 2019 Mid Atlantic EMMY® Awards

TUTV has come away with 12 nominations in 6 categories for this year’s Mid Atlantic EMMY® College Production Awards! Our student producers have nabbed nominations in categories ranging from cultural affairs to long form, including two nominations in the talent category for alums Sarah Metts and Vince Coll. As a professional baker, Dave gets asked this question all of the time. On this solo episode of his cooking show, Baker Dave demonstrates how to combine the perfect level of fat, milk and sugar to whip up a batch of ice cream with the perfect consistency. He also makes an accompanying cookie to eat alongside the ice cream to create the perfect summer treat to beat the heat.

A documentary of hope in the city of Camden, NJ

Across the Bridge

Across the Bridge is a student-made documentary that follows community outreach members working in Camden, New Jersey, including a nun, a high school football coach and the police chief, as they describe what they have been working towards in the city and what they hope to see in the future.

In 1991, Sister Helen began working in Camden, New Jersey as a teacher. After helping a mother find her daughter’s murderer, Sister Helen’s plans quickly changed. From this, Sister Helen started helping more families and ended up opening Guadalupe Family Services and last year opened an after-school program for high school students.

This half-hour documentary was produced by students Abbie Lee, Ryan Leddy, Casey McKenna, Jenna Miele, and Colin Clark for Kristine Weatherston’s class. Tune in to TUTV on Saturday, August 10 at 3:30 and 11:30 p.m. and Sunday, August 11, at 7:30 a.m. to see the program in full.

Klein College’s Advanced Sports Reporting class presents a panel discussion of the award-winning 2016 ESPN documentary Life as Matt, about transgender South Jersey high school track star Matt Dawkins. Matt put his dreams of competing in the Olympics on hold to pursue life living his true identity. Following a screening of the E:60 production is a panel discussion concerning the making of the documentary and transgender issues with guests Matt Dawkins, Matt’s mother Tammi Grovatt-Dawkins, and Mike Farrell, an ESPN producer.

Watch it on TUTV on Wednesday, August 7 at 4:30 p.m. and 12:30 a.m. and on Thursday, August 8, at 8:30 a.m.

Watch an unreleased edition of “TUTV Table Read”

TUTV Table Read: The Pillow in the Casket

TUTV Table Read was a show produced at Temple several years ago. Its format was that of a radio play, but performed live and airing unadorned and unedited as it was captured by Temple students. A previously unreleased short segment focusing on skewering the gothic horror subgenre is now being made available to watch online.  Presenting, TUTV Table Read: The Pillow in the Casket.

Newlywed Sally Crawford returns to town to help her mother carry out a witchdoctor’s instructions regarding the burial of her father’s heart. They dig up a rusty metal box containing a decomposed human heart and a skeletal finger wearing a wedding ring, belonging to Sally’s dad and Mrs. Crawford’s husband. Mrs. Crawford then takes a tuff of coyote fur and places it in the box before placing the box back into the dirt in order for it to “marinate until it’s time.” Being back in her hometown brings back memories of her father and forces Sally to confront her mother about his death and her final wishes.

Black America is a TV show on CUNY TV that profiles Black business leaders, activists, writers and artists to explore what it means to be black in America in the 2010s. The weekly half-hour program uses in-depth conversations to gauge this experience in a time of both turbulence and breakthroughs.

Emmy® Award-winning TV anchor and journalist Carol Jenkins hosts the series. Ms. Jenkins has a long broadcast history with Black public affairs shows, beginning as pioneering co-host of WNBC-TV’s Positively Black, one of the earliest New York City programs dedicated to the Black experience. Black America is co-produced by Audra D. West and Duane Ferguson. Robert Isaacson, CUNY TV’s Executive Director, serves as Executive Producer with Susan Iger and Gail R. Yancosek, CUNY TV Co-Executives in Charge of Production.

Watch it every Monday on Comcast 50 and Verizon 45 within Philadelphia city limits or online everywhere at 11:30 a.m. and 7:30 p.m. starting July 29.

In 2018, TUTV’s General Manager Paul Gluck sat down with the late, great broadcast pioneer Lew Klein for an hour-long conversation over the summer for the first in depth interview with the station since the renaming of the School of Media and Communication to the Klein College of Media and Communications.

A Philadelphia broadcast legend, long-time professor, and the namesake of the Klein College of Media and Communications, Lew Klein talked about his 60+ years as an educator, how he got his start in broadcasting, the ways in which television has changed, his role at the University over the years, and the story behind the Lew Klein Excellence in Media Awards, as well as some of his former students, including actor Bob Saget and sports announcer Merrill Reese.

Tune in to TUTV on Thursday, August 1 at 1 and 9 p.m. to watch this wide-ranging discussion in commemoration of Lew’s passing last month.

Hosted by the Center for Media and Information Literacy, the second annual Children’s Media Career Symposium was held on April 11, 2019 at the Klein College of Communication, featuring two moderated panel discussions about trends in the children’s media industry and career opportunities in the field.

Watch doc about little known chapter in USA history on Thurs

Uintah, United

Tune in this week for an inspiring documentary about a little-known chapter in American history. Produced in 2009 by then-Weber State University student Issac Goeckeritz, Uintah United begins in 1922 when a small Utah town was rocked with the news that the local school principal had shot and killed one of his students.

The student was a member of a gang of boys who had been responsible for threatening and driving out eight prior principals. Shocked and deeply divided by the event, the community of Uintah broke apart. Uintah United tells the remarkable story of the principal’s successor, Golden Kilburn, who masterfully transformed the lives and behavior of these troublesome boys and healed a community.

Tune in to TUTV on Thursday, July 11 at 1 and 9 p.m. to catch this hour-long film narrated by former KSL news anchor Dick Nourse.

Hollywood on Trial

This 1976 documentary went on to be nominated for an Academy Award for its efforts to examine the 1947 hearings of the House Un-American Activities Committee and its aftermath. Through interviews with key figures, archival footage and narration by John Huston, Hollywood on Trial chronicles the creation of the Hollywood blacklist, which prevented many screenwriters, directors, actors and others from getting work in Hollywood after being accused of harboring Communist views. Careers and lives having been ruined, this film surveys the damage and takes stock on the motivations behind this awful episode in Hollywood’s history.

Philly welterweight Jaron “Boots” Ennis is, at just 21 years of age, an undefeated boxer with 22 wins. This Temple student-made documentary maps out the history of boxing in Philadelphia and places Jaron within that context as a peerless, top athlete–the first this city has had in years. Highlighting his perseverance and raw talent, this short film portrays the young charismatic boxer’s journey to becoming the best of all time.

Boots: Fighting Out of Philly was produced by students Alistar McDonald, Ian Morris, John Newman, Stormydhae Kelsey, Shawn Gardini, and Michelle Doheny for Kristine Weatherson’s Media Studies and Production class.

TUTV remembers our mentor and friend Lew Klein

Lew Klein–Philadelphia broadcast pioneer, educator, and namesake of Temple’s Klein College of Media and Communication–passed away Wednesday. A great friend to the station and a mentor who touched the lives of many across this city and the field of journalism, Lew Klein also taught at Klein College for more than sixty years. Klein was honored several times at Temple for his service to the university and his extraordinary career, culminating with the university’s School of Media and Communication being renamed the Lew Klein College of Media and Communication in March 2017.

TUTV will honor his memory on Tuesday, June 18 at 1 and 9 p.m. by airing the official Klein College naming dedication ceremony featuring host Bob Saget from 2017. Join us in celebrating the life of this longtime supporter of journalism education by tuning in. TUTV is available to watch on Comcast 50/Verizon 45 within Philadelphia city limits or online anywhere.
