New Bouncing Back highlights recovery from illness

Join host Lisa Bien and tune in to a new Bouncing Back highlighting recovery from serious illness and the sometimes long road to a diagnosis.

DaVita Garfield, a single mother, began experiencing exhaustion but figured that she was just tired from her demanding career and full personal life. But her symptoms progressed to include blurred vision, breathlessness, and fainting. She went to the doctor’s only to be told she was simply depressed. She attended therapy for a year without her symptoms alleviating; in fact, they were multiplying. Her life was shrinking. Eventually she found out that she was suffering from a rare and life-threatening disease. She had a tumor on her pituitary gland.

New Temple Smash shot at Philly Improv Theater premieres

Student-run variety show Temple Smash premieres a new hour-long episode on TUTV this weekend. Most of the show was shot live at the Philly Improv Theater in February. Mixed in with these performances are pre-shot digital shorts.

Graduating seniors will be featured on Temple Update in a special hour-long presentation of the newscast starting at 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. OwlSports Update begins at noon and re-airs at 8 p.m. Tune in to Comcast 50, Verizon 45 and online.

We Need to Talk is back with another episode taking a close look at topics affecting women. In this episode, hosts Tanjeen Twinkle, Jenna Song, Imzadi Davis, and Kyra Miller and correspondent Luv’En-Ya Rowland tackle dating, parenting, social media usage and safety.

The team starts the program by describing their ideal date and what they personally feel are relationship do’s and don’t’s. Then, in light of the recent murder of a USC student who was attempting to use a rideshare service, the hosts discuss how to make sure you and your friends are safe on nights out. Later, they cover being raised by helicopter parents and how to deal with the stresses of social media.

A new, jam-packed episode of The World at Temple premieres on TUTV this week. Host Luv’En-Ya Rowland interviews Qiyue “Q” Sun, writer and director of the series Big Trouble in Little America, a quirky dark comedy featuring four Asian students. Hailing from China, Q worked with film producer Valerie Bailey, a senior in the FMA program, who joins Q to discuss the making of the dissertation project.

Later, Ana Cristina Linares shows the audience how to make Venezuelan arepas in a new segment of Cooking with Cameron, and the co-presidents of the Society of Emerging African Leaders (SEAL) come to the set. Nana Kwasi Nyantakya and Gbemisola Ogunyemi discuss the mission and activities of their group and the differences in their respective experiences growing up in an African country and as a first generation immigrant in the United States.

Tune in Thursday for an hour of Spanish language programming

TUTV presents a solid hour of Spanish language programming this Thursday, April 18 beginning at 1 and 9 p.m. with talk show La Charla and ending with Lo Último at 1:30 and 9:30 p.m.

On the season finale of La Charla, host Rafael Logroño is joined by panelists Bibiana Correa, Luisa Suarez, and Melvin Saravia to discuss the recent college application cheating scandal involving, among others, Felicity Hoffman and Lori Loughlin; a recent study listing what millennials find most stressful (including slow wifi and losing your phone); and what the panelists see as their own biggest stressors (school and the economy). They also respond to letters asking for relationship advice from Elle magazine, and end the show with a contest.

Lo Ultimo, the Spanish-language arm of weekly news program Temple Update, airs their last broadcast of the semester, featuring Monica Logroño reporting from London on Brexit protests and more.

TUTV students win big at BEA Media Festival!

TUTV students attended the 2019 BEA Festival in Las Vegas this week, where they were presented with four awards in three categories. The Broadcast Education Association (BEA) is an international academic media organization, driving insights, excellence in media production, and career advancement for educators, students, and professionals. The BEA Festival of Media Arts is an international refereed exhibition of faculty creative activities and a national showcase for student work. The Festival provides a venue for exhibition of winning submissions, including recognition of project authors, through showcase and awards sessions held during BEA’s annual convention in Las Vegas.

Hour-long special of Bouncing Back premieres Monday

For a one-hour special edition of Bouncing Back, host Lisa Bien invites three former Temple students who had appeared on previous episodes of Bouncing Back to return to the set to describe how their stories have evolved after facing their struggles head on and reclaiming their lives.

Anna Tate (who appeared on the first ever episode of Bouncing Back), Sarah Zigler, and Tracy Yatso update viewers on how their lives have progressed and how they’ve continued to thrive despite previous and continuing difficulties. Anna survived an eating disorder, while Sarah struggled with bipolar disorder and the stigma attached to it, and Tracy suffered the after effects of a concussion for 8 years only to go back to school and encounter further challenges. All three not only bounced back from their struggles but they have gone on to lead successful lives, using their experiences to help others and continue to grow.

ill Fated Natives’ Palmtree b appears on TUTV Wednesday

Lead singer and bass guitarist for ill Fated Natives (iFN), Bets “Palmtree b” Charmelus, visits the set of Philly Famous Podcast to discuss his band, Philadelphia, and much more. iFN has a unique sound that incorporates gritty blues, hard rock and smooth jazz, and they’re especially known for their explosive live performances.

Host Greg Holdsman and Charmelus discuss the origins of the band, the spiritual quality of their live shows, the chemistry amongst the group members, what it’s like to be a Black rock group in a city known for hip-hop and rap, and the peaks and valleys of the last 5 years.

It’s time for an all new Temple Talk on TUTV! The hosts sit down to discuss what’s been happening in pop culture news, including Jussie Smollett’s legal case and Justin Bieber’s mental health struggles. Later, Temple student Abby Steinour visits the set and tells her story. Having initially enrolled in business school at Temple, she eventually switched tracks to follow her passion, majoring in Graphic Design and launching Egg & Bee comics, which has since amassed a large online following.

Next up, special musical guest Jaime Wouters performs live in the studio. Her new song, “Mistakes,” was produced by Temple’s own student-run recording studio, Bell Tower Music.

TUTV’s first all female talk show returns Thursday

We Need to Talk, TUTV’s first female-focused show, covers entertainment, trends, culture, relationships, health, and more. In the second episode of the program airing Thursday, hosts Tanjeen Twinkle, Jenna Song, Imzadi Davis and Kyra Marie Miller cover a variety of topics, including whether the Rejection Hotline (a phone number women can give to men who are persistently asking for their digits) is useful or mean, whether exes can remain friends (what does it mean that Brad attended Jen Aniston’s birthday party?), and TV shows or bands the hosts want to bring back. The hosts also dissect their different cultural backgrounds through the lens of how they were disciplined by their parents as children.
