Boots: Fighting Out of Philly

Philly welterweight Jaron “Boots” Ennis is, at just 21 years of age, an undefeated boxer with 22 wins. This Temple student-made documentary maps out the history of boxing in Philadelphia and places Jaron within that context as a peerless, top athlete–the first this city has had in years. Highlighting his perseverance and raw talent, this short film portrays the young charismatic boxer’s journey to becoming the best of all time.

Boots: Fighting Out of Philly was produced by students Alistar McDonald, Ian Morris, John Newman, Stormydhae Kelsey, Shawn Gardini, and Michelle Doheny for Kristine Weatherson’s Media Studies and Production class.

TUTV remembers Lew Klein, TV pioneer and educator

TUTV remembers our mentor and friend Lew Klein

Lew Klein–Philadelphia broadcast pioneer, educator, and namesake of Temple’s Klein College of Media and Communication–passed away Wednesday. A great friend to the station and a mentor who touched the lives of many across this city and the field of journalism, Lew Klein also taught at Klein College for more than sixty years. Klein was honored several times at Temple for his service to the university and his extraordinary career, culminating with the university’s School of Media and Communication being renamed the Lew Klein College of Media and Communication in March 2017.

TUTV will honor his memory on Tuesday, June 18 at 1 and 9 p.m. by airing the official Klein College naming dedication ceremony featuring host Bob Saget from 2017. Join us in celebrating the life of this longtime supporter of journalism education by tuning in. Temple’s very own record label, Bell Tower Music, presents a live performance by Magda Meringue for TUTV’s Live From Studio G. 

Magda Meringue is an experimental pop/jazz/alternative band rooted in Philadelphia, PA. Led by twin sisters Lauren and Jules Keller, and supported by New Orleans drummer Austen Travis, Magda Meringue melds satisfyingly dissonant vocal harmonies with an eloquent mix of global influences, including Oingo Boingo, The Clash, No Doubt, Peggy Lee, Edith Piaf, Henry Mancini, and Bob Cobert.

Each year, the Office of Student Development at Temple University sponsors up to 30 students to attend the Inclusive Leadership Conference. The Inclusive Leadership Conference strives to build a better Philadelphia by giving college students from around the region the chance to enhance their leadership knowledge and skills through presentations, workshops, dialogues, and panels on topics related to inclusive leadership and social change.

The Power and Future of Media

Surrounded by a seemingly endless array of media options, new technologies, and platforms, America has become a 24/7 mediated society, with Americans consuming media 11 hours a day on average according to a recent Neilsen poll. A new TUTV program, The Power and Future of Media, seeks to delve into the practical and ethical concerns of our media present as well as our media future.

Tune in for the premiere, hosted by Klein Media Studies and Production graduate student, Devlynn Deitrick, who is joined by Klein Professor Ali Castellini. Together they discuss radio and podcasts in particular.

Miss this year’s Spring Graduation Ceremony?

Tune in to TUTV beginning at 1 p.m. on Thursday, June 13 to see graduating seniors walk and honorary degree recipients honored at the 132nd Commencement Exercises, which were held in the Liacouras Center at 1776 N. Broad St. on May 9, 2019.

North Philly native and world famous boxer Bernard Hopkins Jr., former Temple Basketball Coach Fran Dunphy, and lawyer and Board of Trustees member Leonard Barrack were also honored with doctorates at the ceremony.

Kissimmee Basin is a stunning documentary on the history of the Northern Everglades, shot in spectacular HD. Travel through the Kissimmee Valley back through time to discover the well-reasoned, yet unforeseen, consequences of a flood control project that turned the 103-mile long meandering river full of life, into a 52-mile long, multi-million dollar over-engineered channel that drained the surrounding wetlands, caused the disappearance of large flocks of wading birds, and a significant decline of an abundant freshwater fishery.

Sellers is planning to move to Los Angeles after graduating early with a Media Studies and Production from Temple.  Dave and Veronica discuss this and more while making cupcakes using her family recipe. The secret ingredient in this cake is coffee!

Alfred Hitchcock’s “The Lady Vanishes” airs Sunday

TUTV’s Sunday classic movie programming continues this weekend with Hitchcock’s witty and compelling comic thriller from 1938.

The Lady Vanishes concerns a young English tourist traveling by train in Europe (played by Margaret Lockwood) who discovers that her elderly traveling companion (Dame May Whitty) seems to have disappeared from the train. After her fellow passengers deny ever having seen the elderly lady, the young woman is helped by a musicologist (a young Michael Redgrave), and the two proceed to search the train for clues to the old woman’s disappearance, which results in many plot twists and unexpected developments.

The film will air on TUTV this Sunday, June 2 at 1 and 9 p.m.

Interview with legendary coach Fran Dunphy airs Wednesday

Fran Dunphy sits down for a candid chat with Philly Famous Podcast host Greg Holdsman after his last season as the legendary Head Coach of Temple’s Men’s Basketball team. Dunphy, known as Mr. Big Five and the winningest coach in Big Five history, talks with Greg about his long career and his approach to coaching. Greg asks why, after 40 years, Fran decided to shave off his trademark mustache. Dunphy also touches on his work with Coaches Against Cancer and other charities.

Show creator and Temple alumna Nydja Hood returns to the set of The Vibe for the first time since graduating! Nydja joins attorney and professor Timothy Welbeck, Esq. and host Sydney Umezurike to participate in this episode’s edition of Poppyn’ Topics. Later, the producers arranged something a little different for the Creative Spotlight segment: magician Joshua Masado, with Sydney as his unbelieving assistant, deftly wows the crowd with his magic tricks.
