Interpreting Ancient Chinese Fashion

Two San Francisco fashion designers – Jude Gabbard and fourth-generation Chinese-American Colleen Quen – seek inspiration by visiting China for the first time. They skip cosmopolitan Shanghai and head straight to one of China’s most remote and poorest areas, Guizhou Province. Colleen and Jude visit the ancient villages of the Miao (Hmong) and Buyi people, where the villagers help them decode some recurring motifs on their clothing. Then, the pair takes a hands-on approach to learning about wax-dye batiks, embroidery, silver jewelry, unusual hairstyles and adornments – and they explore the layers of meaning behind these unique designs and accessories. Once back in the United States, Colleen and Jude try to incorporate their experience in China into their designs. What will the resulting fashion fusion look like? Have their approaches to design changed? At the conclusion of the documentary, Colleen and Jude reveal the answers when they debut their China-inspired collections at a San Francisco art gallery.
