A documentary for beer lovers airs Friday

On Tap title cardOn Tap is a  documentary made by Temple students that explores the rising popularity of craft beer and its impact on the American beer market, specifically in the Philadelphia region. Patrons, fans, and owners of craft breweries are interviewed to give insight into why these flavorful brews have caught on.

Prior to the craft beer trend, American beer was considered to be limited to three brands: Budweiser, Miller, and Coors. Now craft breweries are expanding the palate of American beer drinkers by producing smaller batch brews with more experimental, intense flavors.

The emergence of craft beer has also allowed beer fans to engage in other positive movements, such as supporting the local economy and their community and practicing sustainable consumer habits.

Owners of local breweries (Tom Kehoe of Yards, Scott Rudich of Round Guys Brewing Company) and pubs (Fergie Carey of Belgian Cafe, Monk’s) are highlighted through interviews in this short film.

On Tap was produced by Robert Chaz Flores, Ryan Hallas, Caitlin McHale, Lydia Peterson and Abby Zeppenfelt for Professor Kristine Trever Weatherston’s Media Studies & Production class.

The program airs Friday May 16 at 12:30 and 8:30 p.m. on Comcast channel 50, Verizon 45 and online.

Learn to cook fish tacos with all homemade ingredients

Fish tacos on a plate

Temple University Executive Chef Tim Morris oversees event catering across the Main Campus as well as the menu at the Diamond Club, but he takes some time away from his busy schedule to show us how to cook up fresh and delicious fish tacos, from scratch, in a new episode of Baker Dave Presents.

Chef Morris gives us expert advice in how to prepare fish tacos from top to bottom. He begins by describing how to select the freshest fish at the market by looking at its eyes and smelling under the gills. He then illustrates how to properly filet a striped bass, and even gives suggestions on what to do with the remaining fish scraps. Next, Chef Morris and Baker Dave continue by demonstrating how to make every other component from scratch, including the flour tortillas, the salsa, the jicama salad, and the guacamole.

Life with ADHD

ADHD

Bouncing Back tackles Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) in its latest episode, which airs Wednesday, April 9 at 12:30 and 8:30 p.m.

Host Lisa Bien invites student Ethan Wasserman to share how his life has been impacted since receiving a diagnosis of ADHD in kindergarten. Ethan describes how this disorder not only made it hard for him to succeed academically, but also caused him to feel mentally inferior, which in turn damaged his self-esteem.

However, he turned his life around and bounced back after coming to Temple and utilizing the Wellness Resource Center (HEART) on campus. He has since learned how to cope with ADHD and has become a peer educator and mentor at Temple. His mission now is to educate others about ADHD.

To provide clinical and general insight into this condition, Lisa Bien invited Lauren Highsmith, a Temple alumna and current Student Resources Coordinator for the University’s Disability Resources and Services department, to the set of Bouncing Back.

Temple students recreate hit music video on campus

Make chicken parmesan with Baker Dave

A plate of chicken parmesan

Joe Paris, the Assistant Dean of the College of Education at Temple University, joins the set of Baker Dave Presents… to make a classic Italian American dish, but with a twist.

Paris says that growing up in Northern Jersey gave him a lot of exposure to Italian culture, which left him with a love of Italian food. So he brings in his wife’s recipe for chicken parmesan to the set, but he’s has never made if before. Fortunately, Baker Dave assists Paris and gives him some tips, including how to make an easy, delicious tomato sauce from scratch. Paris still adds his own touch to the recipe by subbing in sharp provolone for mozzarella cheese.

Get to know more about Joe Paris tomorrow, April Fool’s Day, at 12:30 and 8:30 p.m. on Comcast 50/Verizon 45 and online.

Introducing TUTV’s first entertainment talk show, Temple Talk!

Temple Talk logo

Tune in to Comcast 50/Verizon 45 or online on March 26 at 12:30 and 8:30 p.m. to meet SMC students Luke Frey, Logan Wilson, Ed LeFurge, and Marissa Giletto, who host a discussion of recent entertainment news in the pilot episode of Temple Talk.

The quartet talk a variety of entertainment related topics including Jimmy Fallon’s first day as host of the Tonight Show, the Academy Awards, and the ubiquity of Netflix. They then speak to special guest Doug Friese, who appeared along with other members of the Temple Marching Band–in their underwear–in the Academy Award nominated film, Wolf of Wall Street. Also featured on the show are Kylie Winkler and Jessica Sidhu to give insight into campus fashion.

Freshman MSP majors Marissa Giletto and Luke Frey came up with the idea of Temple Talk after seeing that TUTV lacked a student program that highlighted entertainment news. You can follow Temple Talk on Twitter and Facebook.

How are very young children affected by explicit lyrics in music?

Parental Advisory logo

Host Sherri Hope Culver talks to professionals in the music industry, including those who work with kids, to explore the topic of explicit lyrics in songs and what they may do to children ages 10 and below. Could their absence in an edited version of a song trigger curiosity? What happens when a previously “clean” pop song features a hip hop artist who uses profanity? And who is held accountable? Record companies for marketing songs with explicit lyrics to kids? Artists for writing 2 versions of a song so kids know there’s a clean version and a version with explicit lyrics? Parents for not monitoring what their kids listen to?

Culver is joined on set by Kathy O’Connell, host of the WXPN radio program Kid’s Corner; Gabe Romano, a member of the kid’s indie music band, The Plants; Phil Nicolo, an award-winning music producer and Adjunct Professor at Temple University; and DJ Bonics, hip hop DJ for Wiz Khalifa and radio DJ at Wired 96.5 FM, to answer these questions and more.

Tune in Wednesday, March 19 at 12:30 and 8:30 p.m. to TUTV to watch this new thought-provoking episode of Media Inside Out.

What does it mean to remember someone?

Grave statue

In Memoriam is a short documentary about the abandonment and ongoing restoration of Mount Moriah Cemetery in Southwest Philadelphia. Mount Moriah is a sprawling, pastoral cemetery with 380 acres of grave plots on the outskirts of the city.

The film presents in depth information regarding the cemetery’s history from its genesis in 1855 to its gradual decay and eventual abandonment in 2011. But it also highlights the people who are still invested in Mount Moriah’s continuance and the preservation of the plots of their buried beloveds. In Memoriam asks its audience to ponder what it means to remember someone, even after they are long gone.

Watch it on TUTV Friday, March 14 at 12:30 and 8:30 p.m.

This program was created by Temple students Courtney Coombs, Azsa Jenkins, Rachel Kerr, Lisa Levonian and Allie Serabo for Professor Kristine Trever Weatherston’s Production class. To learn more about the film, visit their Facebook page.
