Hosts Kristine Aponte and Luisa Suárez return to the set of La Charla with a new panelist, Esteban Suárez Gómez, and returning panelist Dilebi Cuevas.

Together they discuss the reaction to this year’s J.Lo Super Bowl performance, and Univision’s Lo Nuestro Awards, and whether or not the awards are representative of what artists are popular in Latin households or more globally. They then move on to politics to discuss how the controversy over suspended elections in the Dominican Republic has resulted in greater awareness among the diaspora of corruption within governments across Latin America. Then, as usual, the hosts and panelists engage in a game at the end of the program.

“One by one”: Student voices from quarantine

Hear from Temple students as they self-isolate for the remainder of the semester. The 17 students who enrolled in the Spring 2020 TUTV Practicum course this year expected to be immersed a studio-based course, learning multi-camera television production and creating original programming for TUTV and templetv.net, but that all ended two weeks ago.

Now, in light of self-quarantine measures due to the rapid spread of the COVID-19 virus, students are stuck at home without access to these facilities. Instead, they will tell their share their experiences in quarantine via short video pieces in a program titled “One by One”. The stories they tell range from personal tales of the challenges they confront in this disquieting time, to messages of optimism, and others that tackle the seriousness of the situation with comedy. Temple students collaborate on COVID-19 coverage

In the midst of an unprecedented global crisis, Temple student media groups have joined forces and consolidated their efforts to cover the coronavirus pandemic. The Temple News, Temple Update, Lo Ultimo and WHIP Radio are providing extensive reporting on COVID-19 which is available to view now at a newly created integrated student media site, covid19tu.com.

Using podcasts, video, Spanish-language articles, and more, student journalists are covering the impact on Temple, the city of Philadelphia, and the country with support from TUTV and Temple’s Klein College of Media and Communication.

Season finale of The World at Temple premieres Thurs

Host Luv’en-Ya Rowland returns to the set of The World at Temple for the season finale. First she interviews Temple student and filmmaker Yinan Wang, who discusses his new documentary piece about the owner of a struggling Chinese restaurant and the tensions that develop with his sons, who he expects to take over the family business. The filmmaker used to work there, and knew the family before deciding to create a piece based on their interfamilial dynamic. Later, watch a video created by a World at Temple reporter who was studying abroad at the University of East Anglia in the UK this semester.

Temple Tonight premieres a new season this month! In the season premiere, Jay and Ava discuss post-graduation plans: Jay reveals his streetwear brand, while Ava makes a foray into Instagram influencing. Special guest Flower Marie joins the set to discuss her semester abroad in Scotland, during which she met the Loch Ness monster. Next, two students from Temple, Charley Parker and Madison Murphy, discuss making their short film, Wailing, which is set to premiere on April 21. Lastly, Tyler Wolf performs up a stand up routine.

Sherri Hope Culver, director of the Center for Media and Information Literacy at Temple University, will appear to host another episode of her show, Media Inside Out, a television talk show that explores the media we love to watch, listen to, read and play with an analytical and critical approach. Media Inside Out approaches media with an appreciation for its potential as entertainment, and even as an educational tool, but balances that with an understanding of its impact and influence. Each episode digs deep into a specific media theme or media property.

Brand Matters examines Pride Month advertising

Brand Matters host Steve McLean, an Adjunct Instructor of Advertising at Klein College, looks ahead to the month of June with Stephen Facenda of Viamark Advertising, and John Duffin from Duffin Media. Together they discuss how brands are using Pride Month, celebrated during June to commemorate the Stonewall Riots of 1969.

But has Pride month become another selling season on the corporate calendar? Is it a cynical cash grab or an attempt to show solidarity with a historically oppressed group of people? Are brands only embracing rainbow advertising now that it has become ‘safe’ to support LGTBQ+ causes? McLean shows some examples of ads that show a deeper commitment to the cause than those that merely adopt a rainbow-colored logo for the month of June.

Baker Dave Presents… Vegan Eggrolls with Dr. Aaron Smith

Dr. Aaron Smith, known as “The Rapping Professor”, brings a recipe for what he called “North Philly Southwestern Eggrolls” which are also vegan, as Aaron himself is, to the set of Baker Dave’s cooking show.

Aaron, an Assistant Professor in the Department of Africology and African American Studies at Temple University, went viral for writing and performing a rap about being a freshman and being new to the university, encouraging students to persevere. He and Baker Dave prepare his dish while discussing cooking techniques and why Aaron went vegan, among other topics.

New A Broader View talks Democratic Party Primary

On a new episode of A Broader View, host Karen Turner and her guests discuss the 2020 Democratic Presidential primary, and in particular the New Hampshire primary. The primary was used as a reporting opportunity for the course Media and American Politics, which had students traveling to NH to do on-the-ground reporting.

Three students who participated in the course, taught by Journalism Department Chair Dr. David Mindich in addition to Karen Turner and Professor David Brown, join the set to discuss the process of writing about minor candidates available on the NH ballot for presidentialhopefuls.org, a site created for the course. Trevor Greinor, Cheyenne Corinne, and Cleves Mongo, all graduate students, go in depth with their experiences reporting in the state.

Student documentary looks at benefits of zoos

Voice for the Wild, a short documentary made by Temple students, explores the positive side of zoos as public opinion has become increasingly negative against them. Using Elmwood Park Zoo as a backdrop for this large-scale issue, the documentary provides an inside look at the people who work there and what continues to drive them. Directed by Brianna Dent, a junior Media Studies and Production major at Temple University, “Voice for the Wild” is her first documentary and won the Animal Welfare Award at the New Hope Film Festival.
