House on Haunted Hill

House on Haunted Hill

This is one of the great scare films of the 1950’s, set in a creepy haunted house rented for a ghoulish party by an eccentric millionaire. Directed by the great horror master, William “Tingler” Castle, the film is really a horrific version of Agatha Christie’s murder mystery And Then There Were None. Guests are invited to a sinister house by a mysterious host and each one is in jeoparody of being murdered before the night is out. The reasons for the foul deeds are a jealous husband (Vincent Price) and a wife plotting to do him in. Some really great shock moments, including a giant vat of acid which leaves only the skeleton of anyone who falls (or is pushed) into it, make this a frightfully fun film. And dig the party favors for each guest – small coffins containing loaded revolvers, which do no good, of course, against ghosts! (1959)
