On a new episode of TUGether!, host Mariam Elias-Danjuma welcomes Lonnie Brown, Kean Family Dean of the Beasley School of Law, for a conversation about leadership, public service and the power of education and law to create meaningful change.
New to Temple, Dean Brown shares what attracted him to Beasley, including the law school’s strong commitment to public service and social justice. He discusses his collaborative approach to leadership and his vision for expanding partnerships across Temple, bringing together law, public health, medicine, social work, education and other disciplines to address complex challenges facing Philadelphia communities.
The conversation also explores Brown’s book, Defending the Public’s Enemy: The Life and Legacy of Ramsey Clark. Brown spent more than a decade researching the former U.S. Attorney General, whose career included involvement in some of the defining civil rights events of the 1960s as well as the controversial clients he represented later in life. Brown explains how getting to know and interview Clark influenced his own teaching and his belief in lawyers as agents of social change.
Brown also looks ahead to opportunities to connect Beasley more closely with Temple’s undergraduate students and the broader Philadelphia community through interdisciplinary programs, civic education and public service.
