Library Lecture: On American Main Streets

Distinguished Temple professor Miles Orvell and photographer Sandy Sorlien speak and answer questions during this interdisciplinary conversation on American Main Streets. Sorlien’s photographic practice reflects city spaces in detail. She has photographed landscapes and townscapes since 1980 and published her work in Fifty Houses: Images from the American Road. Dr. Orvel has focused his research on the cultural meaning of place. His most recent book, The Death and Life of Main Street: Small Towns in American Memory, Space, and Community, recovers the complex and contradictory cultural meanings of the small town and how it problematizes the icon of Main Street.
