A Star is Born

A Star is Born

Philly’s own Bradley Cooper recently released the fourth adaptation of A Star is Born, this time starring Lady Gaga as the titular star. The remake of this prototypical Hollywood fable has met with acclaim and praise, so it seems like a good time to revisit the original 1937 Technicolor picture which served as its basis. Produced by David O. Selznick, the original stars Janet Gaynor as an idealistic aspiring actress who finds success, but at what cost? Tune in to TUTV Sunday, January 20 at 1 and 9 p.m. to find out.

Documentary by Temple alum tells story of Little Italy in LA

Processions of Faith

Processions of Faith

By following the festivities and functions of St. Peter’s Italian Catholic Church, Temple alum and former Head Writer for the Tonight Show Joe Medeiros traces the journey of Italians in Los Angeles from their origins up to today in his documentary film Processions of Faith.

Italians immigrated from Italy bringing their faith and traditions and settled in an area of downtown LA in what became the city’s Little Italy. In 1904, the Parish of St. Peter’s was erected to help he community honor the saints they brought with them from the hilltop towns and villages of their native home. Today, all that remains of Los Angeles’ Little Italy is the Church, but the tradition continues as Italians and Italian-Americans from all over Southern California flock to this historic church to profess their faith, share their food and culture, and venerate their saints.

Watch this moving story on TUTV (Comcast 50/Verizon 45 or online) on Wednesday, December 26 at 2 and 10 p.m.

Author discusses new research on the gender pay gap

‘The Cost of Being a Girl,’ by Yasemin Besen-Cassino

Montclair State University Sociology Professor Yasemin Besen-Cassino discusses her new book, The Cost of Being a Girl, which explores the roots and effects of the gender pay gap–that roughly 20 cent-per-dollar distance between men’s and women’s earnings–on TUTV this Thursday.

Her research, recently published by Temple University Press, reveals how surprisingly early the wage gap starts and how much teenage work experience affects adult careers. By centering on girls and young women, Besen-Cassino filtered out factors that comes into play in peak earning years, such as childbearing and household responsibilities. It has been praised by Publishers Weekly and London School of Economics Review and was featured in the Washington Postthe Guardian, MTV, CNN, and the Philadelphia Inquirer, among many others.

Tune in to TUTV on Thursday, December 6 at 1 and 9 p.m. to see a talk with the author from October hosted by Temple Library.
