Student documentary tells history of Philly jazz

Aircheck: Philly Jazz Isn’t Dead

The term “jazz” evokes a specific image in our minds: one of sultry moods, dim, smoke-filled rooms, and the smooth, cooing sounds of pianos and saxophones. But jazz is as diverse as the city of Philadelphia itself–and what most people don’t realize is that jazz lived, and continues to live, a vibrant life here. Many individuals might argue that jazz in Philadelphia is dead, but the life of Philly jazz is far from over.

Aircheck: Philly Jazz Isn’t Dead features interviews and commentary from renowned Philadelphian-born musicians like Steve Tirpak and Kenny Gamble discussing jazz and its continued relevance in today’s musical landscape.

The short documentary was produced by students Monica Mejia, Shaelyn McGovern, Phil Dupont, and Devin Southard.

Watch it on TUTV this Friday, September 18 at 12:30 and 8:30 p.m. on Comcast 50, Verizon 45 or online.

Soup kitchen at Chosen 300

But You Considered Me tells the story and celebrates the work of Chosen 300 Ministries, a soup kitchen that hands out 100,000 meals a year to Philadelphia’s homeless. The short documentary also highlights the trajectory of one volunteer, Wendell, who went from dealing drugs and fostering a drug habit, to homeless, to helping the homeless.

Student producers Erin Kantner, Steph Mettler, Angel Morales, Xueer Ren and Alex Culyba made the documentary to show how volunteering one’s time to help others can change peoples’ lives, including that of volunteers themselves. New TUTV doc shows what it’s like to make a “living” as an artist

Starving Artist

What daily struggles do artists face? What hardships did they overcome to continue with their art? Why is the perception of an artist’s life so different from the realities they face? A short student-produced documentary airing Friday, June 19 at 12:30 and 8:30 p.m. explores the hidden struggles and challenges that artists experience in their daily lives through the eyes of four local artists.

Produced by Amber Jones, Eli LaBan, Devin McDonnell, and Joe McHugh for a Media Studies and Production class taught by Kristine Weatherston, The Starving Artist: Planting a Seed For an Unpredictable Harvest delves into the lives of four local Philadelphia artists.

Belle Alvarez, a professional dancer and recent college graduate, teaches dance for several organizations while balancing dance training and conditioning. Bianca Davies, a spoken word artist and writer, uses poetry to speak for her community and loved ones. Ave Gordon, a noise musician, creates abrasive music to vent his frustration with the world while working numerous odd jobs. Terry LaBan, an established cartoonist, describes the romanticism of art versus the realities of financial need and stability.
