Improving the viewing public’s media literacy was host Sherri Hope Culver’s mission when she first had the idea for Media Inside Out. What is it, anyway?

Ever wonder what goes into making a TV show or any media content? Have you considered the true meaning behind a news report, documentary or an advertisement? The ability to access, analyze, and evaluate media content gives you media literacy. But why is it important?

On a new episode of Media Inside Out, Culver brings media expert Michelle Ciulla Lipkin, the executive director of the National Association for Media Literacy Education, to explain why being able to decipher these messages in our media-centric society is so vital.

Notable Philadelphians John Street and Sam Katz come to the set of A Broader View, TUTV’s public affairs talk show, to discuss the current presidential primary. The former opponents sit down with the show’s host, Journalism Professor Karen Turner, and talk Trump, party affiliation, and more.

How Voting Works

Temple students may vote at selected Food Truck Showdown locations listed below. There will be two rounds of voting.

Round 1 – Nomination Round:

In this round, any truck on Temple’s main campus can be selected. Be sure to nominate your favorite on Monday April 4 and Friday April 8 outside of the Howard Gittis Student Center from 12 to 2 p.m. both days.

And the finalists are…

  1. Burger Tank
  2. The Creperie at Temple
  3. Sexy Green Truck
  4. The Footlong Truck
  5. A tie between Kobawoo Express and Insomnia Cookies!

Round 2 – Final Round:

Students must select from the top five finalists on the following days in the Howard Gittis Student Center Atrium:

  • Monday, April 11 from 3:30 to 5 p.m.
  • Wednesday, April 13 from 12 to  2 p.m.

Finally, on Friday April 15, come to the Annenberg Hall Atrium from noon to 2 p.m. to have the final vote.

Rozes performing on Temple TalkIt’s been two years since the premiere of Temple Talk on TUTV, and we’ve got an all-new episode airing tomorrow to celebrate their success!

As usual, the producers of Temple Talk  have lined up a jam-packed show. Former Temple University student and current singer-songwriter Rozes performs and plays a game of Never Have I Ever with the hosts. Rozes talks about her recent success singing on The Chainsmokers’ track Roses, which she cowrote and subsequently hit #6 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Additionally, the hosts cover Philly Fashion Week and speak to PR/New Media Chair for Fashion Group International of Philadelphia Ursula.

Sheona Mackenzie is from Scotland and an avid baker, and she’s also Temple’s First Lady.

In a new episode of Baker Dave Presents…, she shares family recipes for both scones and shortbread, one from her side of the family and one from President Theobald’s, who likewise has Scottish heritage. Together, Sheona and Baker Dave share a wealth of knowledge with their audience on a variety of baking topics, including the ‘imperial ounce’, currants vs raisins, and the pronunciation of the word ‘scone’.

Together We Run

Together We Run is a student-made documentary highlighting the nonprofit organization Back on My Feet, which is dedicated to helping the homeless through participation in a morning running club. By making a commitment to waking up every day at 5:30 a.m. and showing up for a disciplined activity, these individuals are given another chance at what many take for granted.

In particular, the film follows Philadelphia native China White who, with the help of Back on My Feet, recently ended her experience of homelessness and completed the 2015 Philadelphia Half Marathon. The film was made by Temple students Brendan Mills, Vincent Ross, and Michael Sharkey.

Student documentary examines music in post-apartheid South Africa

Breaking The Wall: The Next Generation of South African Sound is a documentary exploring how the music scene in South Africa reflects the state of the country twenty years after the end of apartheid.

The film highlights young artists of diverse genres and backgrounds that are using music to blur the boundaries that still linger physically and mentally since the apartheid days. From tribal house to vernacular hip-hop, this short documentary by Temple University South Africa study abroad student Eli LaBan tells the story of a country in transition through the music of the new generation of “Born Free” South African artists.

Comic book superhero characters now dominate film, television and the merchandising industry, resulting in billions of dollars in profits. What is it about superheroes that pull us in? Is it because they are our savior when we are in troubled times?

On a new episode of Media Inside Out, host Sherri Hope Culver discusses comic book franchises and their influence on the current media landscape with Kate Tanski, a writer for WomenWriteAboutComics.com, and Trey Shields, the Programs Coordinator for Philadelphia Film Society.

Lisa Bien discusses the challenges of overcoming a fear of public speaking with Sharla Feldscher, president of Philadelphia’s premiere PR firm, SFPR. Feldscher shares her story of how she overcame her fears and got involved in public relations. She also provides advice to others struggling with the fear of public speaking.

How does the media portray “The Other” in our society?

The media plays a very big part in portraying and defining what is considered normal or typical, as well as what is seen as outside of mainstream, aka “The Other.” These portrayals can help cement stereotypes and labels, which ultimately shape our beliefs about who should be doing what and who shouldn’t be.

Sherri Hope Culver tackles this delicate subject in a new episode of her show Media Inside Out, premiering Wednesday. She talks to Jacob Bender, Executive Director of the Pennsylvania chapter of the Council on American Islamic Relations, about several issues in the current media landscape, including the upcoming primary elections and Al Jazeera America.

“M or F” talks trans identity and the limitations of the gender binary

A series of conversations about trans identity are captured in this short documentary. Many in the film describe how the gender binary enforced on them by society has affected them. This film addresses barriers put into place by this narrow understanding of gender, and sends a message of hope to those struggling to overcome them.

Featured in this film are Temple Professor Dr. Amanda Czerniawski, author of Fashioning Fat; designer and artist, Wit Lopez; America’s Next Top Model‘s Cory Wade; artist and trans advocate, Robyn Ryan; Ph.D student AJ Young; and social worker, Phoenix Schneider. It was made by James Kenvin, Amaris Mitchell, Katherine O’Connor, Gabrielle Szczepanek, and Dr. Kristine Weatherston.
