Media Inside Out airs live on Monday

A new episode of Media Inside Out exploring media representations of mental illness will air live on TUTV this Monday at 11:30 a.m.

From news reports about crimes committed by mentally unstable individuals, to characters such as “Crazy Eyes” in the series Orange is the New Black, those with mental illness are often portrayed as childlike, immature, unpredictable, unstable and dangerous. But are those portrayals true to life? Host Sherri Hope Culver investigates the way real and fictional people with mental illness appear in the media.

“A Broader View” on immigration

With guests Carmen Guerrero, a local activist and community leader, and Margaret O’Sullivan, Executive Director of the Philadelphia Nationalities Service Center, host Karen Turner takes this controversial issue on in a new episode of A Broader View.

Carmen Guerrero shares her story as an immigrant from Mexico, who arrived here after surviving a kidnapping and had to give up her business, her family and much more to live in safety. Margaret O’Sullivan brings her own experiences from her work in assisting immigrants get their footing in this country to put Carmen’s story in the larger context of the immigrant community in Philadelphia and immigration policy in the United States.

Host Sherri Hope Culver has discussed the issues that arise from “the digital divide” on her show in the past. The conversation continues this week with a eye towards whats happening here in Philadelphia. This episode asks if it is a city’s responsibility to provide digital access and talks to those who are attempting to address the technology gap. Andrew Buss, the Director of Innovation Management at Office of Innovation & Technology for the City of Philadelphia; Jamie Bracey, Director of STEM Education, Outreach & Research at Temple University; and Juliet Fink Yates, Director of Education at Philadelphia FIGHT, join the set to highlight what’s being done now.

Spanish language newscast “Lo ultimo” premieres Wednesday

From the students who bring you Temple Update every Thursday, “Lo ultimo” is a 15 minute newscast completely in Spanish. Monica Logroño hosts the first edition of this program, which covers local and international news, plus in-depth stories about the Latino community in Philadelphia, including a Temple University alum who is committed to making indigenous Latin American languages accessible on YouTube, and a new bilingual PhillyCAM TV program, Atrévete.

In a new edition of the student-produced newscast, PNTV hosts Sarah Sweigart and Rob DiRienzo showcase hidden stories across the city, including the efforts of one Catholic priest to help citizens suffering from opioid addiction, an indoor urban vegetable farm in South Philadelphia, the Temple students involved in the Athletes Helping Athletes program, handball players in Kensington, the Olney Eagles Youth Organization, and much more. Temple Smash, TUTV’s student-produced variety show, returns this weekend with an all-new episode chock-full of zany sketches and absurd characters. The hour-long episode includes dozens of skits performed in front of a live studio audience. Bouncing Back takes on suicide and suicide prevention

On a new episode of Bouncing Back airing Monday, host Lisa Bien sheds light on a dark and difficult subject that is often hidden from public discourse. Suicide is considered by some to be a shameful, selfish act, but guest Drew Bergman has decided to speak publicly about this issue to decrease stigma and perhaps save lives. Drew, now a marketing and business student at Temple University, suffered from depression since the 7th grade, and began to self harm. Eventually, he attempted suicide twice before bouncing back and finding his footing as a suicide prevention advocate.

Joining Lisa and Drew is Dr. Mary Morrison, the Vice Chair for Research in Psychiatry at the Lewis Katz School of Medicine at Temple, whose professional perspective provides further advice for those suffering from mental illness.

Overcoming adversity with Lisa Bien

Happiness, gratitude, and perspective are critical for making the most of your life, but sometimes it takes a long and twisting path to get there. Host Lisa Bien, illustrates this by talking with Roy Kardon, a successful real estate executive. Kardon was not always happy and successful. Working for a family business, he struggled to make ends meet, but he managed to reinvent himself by having gratitude for what he had, rather than lamenting what he lost. Kardon sheds light on how he has used humor, enthusiasm, and joy to bring it to others and change his life.

Temple Tonight welcomes new host Jimmy Williamson plus episode guests student blogger Brandon Kane and musical guest Giancarlo Pignetti in the season premiere.

Temple Tonight is Temple University’s first, only, and by extension, best late night talk show. Host Jimmy Williamson takes a humorous look at world news and happenings on campus, with help from sidekick Bridget O’Hara, correspondent Teresa Tham, and a slew of characters like Frat Guy Todd and Paul, The Comedian with No Life Experience. Temple Tonight also welcomes interesting guests and musical acts from Temple’s campus and Philadelphia at large.

Lew Klein tribute, school naming ceremony airs Wednesday

Lew Klein–a Philadelphia broadcast pioneer, educator, and the namesake of the Lew Klein Alumni in the Media Awards Ceremony–has already contributed so much to the city, Temple, and the broadcast industry. Recently, he contributed even more. After sixty years of teaching at Temple, Klein endowed a historic, multi-million dollar gift to the School of Media and Communication (SMC), and Temple University announced that the School will be renamed the Lew Klein College of Media and Communication next week.

Join TUTV in celebrating Klein with a one-hour special on his life and career starting at 3:20 and again at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, March 29. So much has changed about the publishing industry since the advent of the internet and the Kindle–how do publishers keep up? What challenges are these new avenues presenting to traditional publishing companies and writers? And is the open press movement adding extra pressure to especially academic publishers? Host of Media Inside Out Sherri Hope Culver has a discussion on these topics with two guests who run publishing companies: Mary Rose Muccie, the Director of the Temple University Press, and Kristin Kiser of Running Press Books, both headquartered in Philadelphia.
