The latest edition of From the Temple Student Film Vault features four different works focusing on serious topics ranging from religion to lead poisoning to World War II atrocities.
Lead Baby provides a look at lead poisoning and brain damage in children, the links of which were just beginning to come out at the time. This short documentary is particularly interesting now that lead poisoning is again an issue in American cities. Survival (1976) features the story of a concentration camp survivor. This very short piece focuses solely on his powerful and disturbing account of daily life in the camp. The Road to Aliyah features interviews with several Jewish American families who plan to relocate to Israel. Meetinghouse (1973) is about the Quaker history behind Abington Township, a close suburb of Philadelphia, and the reconstruction of a traditional log meetinghouse in the style of early Quakers.

Baker Dave learns how to make pasta sauce from scratch from his fellow Temple food worker, Vanessa Kukulski. Vanessa runs the Cosi here on campus and for this new episode of Baker Dave Presents… she brings her family’s pasta sauce recipe to the set to show Baker Dave how it’s really done.

On a new episode of her show, host Lisa Bien brings to light the kinds of financial risks undertaken by those who own their own businesses. To talk about business and debt, she brings Cheldin Barlatt Rumer, CEO of I-G Creative and host of This Is It TV, to the show to talk about the struggles of making money even while getting steady business. Linda Farinola, an expert in investment advisory services and financial planning and founder of Sound Financial Solutions, Inc., also appears on set to give advice and identify common roadblocks.

Every year students compete to win TUTV’s “Before I Graduate” contest, the winner of which TUTV helps with one college wish. This year, Valerie Nava won tickets to sit courtside at Temple Basketball’s December game against Yale. Watch the video above to see her wish come true.

MTVU (MTV University) recently visited Temple to enlist students’ help with the pilot episode of their new show, “Campus Takeover”.
“Campus Takeover” lets college students takeover MTVU and show their perspective on a variety of topics and experiences. Students Asad Bokhari, Kaicey Baylor, Alyssa Jerome, Nick Charles, and Jeseamy Muentes were chosen for the task, all of whom you might have seen before on Temple Update here on TUTV. Next week, TUTV will air the one-hour program these students put together. Some segments include professors reading their “Rate My Professor” comments a’la ‘Mean Tweets’, a profile of how one Temple student is giving back to the community, and a “Dating on a Budget” challenge.
So tune in to TUTV Wednesday, February 22 at 1 and 9 p.m. and Saturday, February 25 at 3:30 and 11:30 p.m.
You may have heard about the much-lauded cowboys of North Philadelphia, and TUTV has a narrative to add to the history of horse-riding in the Philly city streets. Airing next week on an all-new From the Temple Student Film Vault, “The Horses of Kensington” tells the story of the children living in Kensington riding and tending to horses and ponies in the early 70s. Made by then-Temple student Charles Monteleone in 1971, the short film delivers a slice of life from the perspective of one Kensington boy and his pony.
Also included in this addition of Student Film Vault is “It Was a Dark and Stormy Night…”, a short fictional film with a plot hinging on a pizza order, by David Speranza, and “Menus”, by Susan Swartz, also from 1971. “Menus” features frank conversations between different groups of friends, including middle aged women discussing women’s lib, young teachers talking about their jobs and dreams, and two devout Christians describing their spiritual ideals.

With the proliferation of fake news stories throughout and since the election, the question arises, how do you figure out what’s true and what’s false? It seems the solution that’s most often discussed is that the reader–you–must do the research to conclude one way or another. However, this solution doesn’t seem realistic, as most people won’t have time to dig further for every news story. So, what do we do about fake news: how do we recognize it? combat it? eliminate it? And who is responsible for it?
Larry Atkins, author of Skewed: A Critical Thinker’s Guide to Media Bias, and Jeff Jubelirer, a corporate public relations specialist, join host Sherri Hope Culver to answer these questions and more.

Temple’s School of Media and Communication hosted the annual Lew Klein Alumni in the Media Awards last year, where comedienne/writer/producer Tina Fey was honored with the 2016 Excellence in the Media Award. Fey also addressed Temple students before the awards ceremony in a Q&A session, giving advice on how to achieve success in the entertainment industry. TUTV will air the Q&A this Wednesday, February 15 at 1 and 9 p.m.
Although she never attended Temple, Fey established, along with her brother Peter, the Donald Fey Memorial Scholarship at SMC following their father’s death last year. The fund supports veterans who want to return to school at SMC, as Donald Fey did after the Korean War.

Dr. Marc Lamont Hill re-visited his hometown and alma mater in November of last year to engage Temple students in a discussion surrounding issues raised in his new book, Nobody: Casualties of America’s War on the Vulnerable, From Ferguson to Flint and Beyond. Hill, a distinguished professor, journalist, CNN and Fox contributor, and VH1 talk show host, argues that episodes of police violence on people of color are no anomaly and are demonstrative of a cruel norm that renders certain people in American culture as “disposable.” The speaking event was coordinated by visiting Temple professor Todd Brewster. Brewster, Hill and the student audience partake in a lively discussion surrounding these issues and more that are affecting America right now.
