Bouncing Back Adversity

Philly-born Jay Sellers comes to the set of Lisa Bien’s Bouncing Back to describe overcoming adversity in his life to become a helping hand in the North Philly community as a school and outreach counselor and therapist.

When he was 15 years old, his father died suddenly and tragically from a heart attack. In a tailspin, teenage Jay went down a self-destructive path and fled home young. However, he bounced back from this dark time to go to college and begin helping others that are facing adversity as Associate Executive Director at NHS.

Dr. Kate Lewis Nolt, an expert in behavior modification, also shares her own stories of bouncing back from adversity as well as giving expert commentary on how to tap into inner strength.

Kayla Martin, Vice President of Services for the current Temple Student Government administration, speaks with the Director of Tuttleman Counseling Services, Dr. John Dimino, about Tuttleman’s wait time and the service innovations that they have implemented to meet the needs of students, such as, drop-in groups, the Resiliency Resource Center, and yoga and mindfulness meditation.

In light of recent student tragedies, many students have been asking Tuttleman Counseling to reduce the wait time so that more students can receive the help they need. As finals approach, and the end of the semester looms, Tuttleman Counseling Services faces their busiest season. Learn more about the services offered by watching the above interview.

We had multiple students who requested to be able to watch the sun set from the top of Morgan Hall, so we organized a dinner with Lu Ann Cahn, Director of Career Services at Klein College.

The Fight

The city of Philadelphia is back on the map after decades of disinvestment. But at what cost? “The Fight” highlights a case of eminent domain in Southwest Philly as a lens into the downsides of revitalization.

Temple student Daniel Ray tackles the history of homeownership in the city of Philadelphia in his film, from redlining, white flight, and blight to revitalization and finally to eminent domain and displacement, through interviews with experts, academics and long-time residents.

Using the funds from winning the Lew Klein Excellence in Media Scholarship, Klein College student Daniel Ray produced, directed, and edited “The Fight” to highlight the lives of Philadelphians that are living in the fallout of the city’s revitalization regime.

Temple University Professor of Journalism Jillian Bauer-Reese has been in recovery from alcoholism for five years and brings her experiences with addiction to the set of Bouncing Back to provide insight into the trajectory from addiction to recovery.

Having bounced back from substance abuse, Professor Bauer-Reese is now an advocate for better media coverage on the topic of addiction, particularly in the city of Philadelphia. She’s fighting back against inaccurate news stories and teaching the next crop of journalists to cover addiction with nuance, respect and a solutions-driven approach.

Tune in Sunday for a film noir classic “The Third Man”

The Third Man

Often praised as “one of the greatest movies of all time,” this 1949 film starring Joseph Cotton will air on TUTV Sunday, April 15 at 1 & 9 p.m.

It all begins when out of work pulp fiction novelist, Holly Martins, arrives in a post-war Vienna divided into sectors by the victorious Allies where a shortage of supplies has lead to a flourishing black market. He arrives at the invitation of an ex-school friend, Harry Lime, who had offered him a job, only to discover that Lime has recently died in a peculiar traffic accident. From talking to Lime’s friends and associates, Martins soon notes the inconsistency in their stories and determines to discover what really happened.

John Helferty and Paul Gluck on Temple People

Professor John Helferty talks to TUTV Station Manager Paul Gluck about his Student Space Exploration and Environmental Systems Laboratory, which is funded by NASA, and the work they’re doing at Temple’s College of Engineering.

He shows off some of the technology his students are working to invent for use in space and discusses the origins of the Lab, which goes back over 20 years.

New Bouncing Back focuses on recovering from sexual assault

Lisa Bien brings Christa Hayburn to the set of Bouncing Back to discuss sexual violence, how it effects survivors, and advocating for other victims of sexual violence.

Christa first shares her own story of bouncing back after being sexually assaulted and her journey overcoming the after effects. Now, she is a Certified Holistic Health and Transformational Coach, a volunteer at Women Organized Against Rape (WOAR), and a speaker for the Rape, Abuse, and Incest National Network (RAINN). She started “Empower Her Voice” to support women healing themselves and to create a network of women who inspire one another.
