Students celebrate Temple’s first National Student Edward R. Murrow Award for Excellence in Video Newscast
Temple University students traveled to Gotham Hall in New York City on October 12 to celebrate a historic achievement: Temple Update’s first National Student Edward R. Murrow Award for Excellence in Video Newscast.
Faculty advisor and former Executive Producer Peter Jaroff and student Supervising Producer Charly Schultz officially accepted the award on stage on behalf of the entire Temple Update team.

Presented by the Radio Television Digital News Association (RTDNA), the award recognized the November 13, 2025 edition of the student-produced newscast. The winning broadcast featured anchors Kevin Gruen and Sydney Humes, sports anchor Aidan Cairns and weather anchor Mariam Elias-Danjuma, under the leadership of Executive Producers Peter Jaroff and Kristina Hammerschmidt.
For the students attending, the evening offered an opportunity to celebrate their work alongside journalists from across the country. Their smiles reflected the pride of seeing their dedication, teamwork and storytelling recognized on a national stage.
Produced by students from Temple’s Klein College of Media and Communication, Temple Update gives aspiring journalists hands-on experience in every aspect of a television newsroom. This honor celebrates their accomplishments and the faculty mentorship that helps them grow.
Congratulations to the entire Temple Update team and to all of this year’s Murrow Award winners!
