Martin Luther King, Jr. at a rally

On Monday, January 20, TUTV invites you to honor the incredible legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. with an inspiring afternoon of films and documentaries. Starting at 12:00 PM, our lineup is designed to reflect on the struggles, triumphs, and brilliance of the Civil Rights Movement and beyond.

The Detroit Civil Rights Trilogy
We’re kicking things off with a one-hour series that dives deep into Detroit’s pivotal role in the Civil Rights Movement. From historic marches to the powerful voices of activists, this trilogy shines a light on how Detroit became a cornerstone in the fight for equality. It’s a story of resilience and hope that will resonate with Dr. King’s vision for a better future.

Uncommon Genius: Dr. Eddie Henderson
Next up, get to know the extraordinary journey of Dr. Eddie Henderson. Dr. Eddie Henderson is a renowned American jazz trumpeter and flugelhorn player. Henderson’s playing is characterized by his lyrical phrasing, inventive improvisations, and use of space and silence in his solos and his ability to blend traditional jazz styles with more contemporary elements, such as funk and soul.

The Jungle (1967)
The Jungle is a dramatized documentary from a project initiated by Temple University social worker Harold Haskins, created by high school students in Northern Philadelphia. The students were involved in every aspect of the production, from the credits to the soundtrack. This short film serves as an early example of modern, independent African American filmmaking. Its unique blend of documentary and fiction offers an authentic perspective on street life through the eyes of gang members themselves.

Awadagin Pratt: Black in America
Then, we celebrate the brilliance of Awadagin Pratt, a world-renowned classical pianist whose story is as inspiring as his artistry. Black in America explores his challenges and triumphs, offering a heartfelt look at the intersection of talent, identity, and advocacy. This story confronts issues of privilege and racism in America and tells a personal account of an all-too-common experience for many people of color in America and worldwide.

Bridging the Divide: Tom Bradley and the Politics of Race
Finally, Bridging the Divide: Tom Bradley and the Politics of Race tells the story of Los Angeles Mayor Tom Bradley, the nation’s first African American mayor elected in an overwhelmingly white city. Mayor for an unprecedented 20 years, Tom Bradley, transformed the city of Los Angeles into a world-class metropolis and became a formidable force for change in American politics. Bridging the Divide raises critical issues about race, coalitions, and policing in urban America. It is especially relevant during these times when the nation is at a tipping point in the struggle against racial injustice and police brutality.
