2014 Temple Sports Journalism Summit

Temple’s 3rd annual sports summit features keynote speaker Peter King, a renowned sports writer and Emmy winner for the HBO program, Inside the NFL.

Beginning the conference is a new addition to the summit: Art of the Interview. Panelists open up to answer general interview questions concerning what their organization would be looking for in a potential new hire. The panel is comprised of Ron Burke, Comcast SportsNet anchor/reporter; Jon Johnson, WIP Host & Sixers and Phillies reporter; Dana O’Neil, ESPN senior writer; and Mike Sielski of The Philadelphia Inquirer.

The second portion of the summit, Social Media and How It Has Changed Sports Coverage, takes a look at how stories in sports are now broken via social media and how the necessity to maintain a strong online presence is paramount to retaining an audience. There to discuss this subject are panelists Howard Bryant, ESPN.com and ESPN: The Magazine; Leslie Gudel, Comcast SportsNet; Ryan Lawrence, Philadelphia Daily News; and Anna Orso, BillyPenn.com.

As one of the most respected football writers in America, Peter King has covered the National Football League for nearly three decades and has been writing for Sports Illustrated since 1989. TheMMQB.com is a new football-only website that showcases King’s unmatched access to the football world. While King was managing editor of HBO’s Inside the NFL in the 2000s, the series won three Emmys. In this keynote lecture King gives students a history of how sports broadcasting has been shaped and formed since his days at college and how the new frontier of sports broadcasting is never certain. King tells students to take the opportunity to diversify your skill-set by taking part in all aspects of news, including both radio and television.

The final portion of the summit, The Voices of Philadelphia Sports, features a panel of local play-by-play sports announcers. Legendary sportscaster Merrill Reese, JOUR ’64, has been the play-by-play voice of the Philadelphia Eagles since 1977; he joins his alma mater for a panel that brings together the city’s renowned play-by-play announcers: Marc Zumoff, RTF ’92, of the 76ers; Jim Jackson of the Flyers; and Scott Franzke of the Phillies. The panelists take students through their personal journey of breaking into broadcasting, and how they were able to navigate through the Philadelphia market to get to the coveted position they hold today.
