The Road to Bali

The Road To Bali

This Bob Hope/Bing Crosby “road” picture, with the underwater antics of Bob and Bing purporting to be deep sea divers and battling a giant squid could have easily been called “Saps at Sea”, had this title not been used earlier by another “buddy” team, Laurel & Hardy. In this musical comedy, the boys are hoofers and are being chased the father of a girl both of these “lovers” had promised to marry. After narrowly escaping a shotgun wedding, they meet their match with lovely Dorothy Lamour as Princess Lalah from a South Sea Balinese Island. After the boys rescue Lalah from the evil prince Arok, and Bob miraculously survives a giant squid attack while diving for buried treasure, they each vie for her hand, with Bing coming out on tap because his crooning is somewhat better than Bob’s bad jokes. In an outrageous bit, Lalah reminisces about her childhood companion, which turns out to be a chimpanzee with Bob Hope’s head! Another classic comedy team, Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis  make an appearance with Jerry mugging for the camera. All and all there’s a lot of comedy to enjoy and it is great to see some of Hope best “bad” routines (1952).
