The term “jazz” evokes a specific image in our minds: one of sultry moods, dim, smoke-filled rooms, and the smooth, cooing sounds of pianos and saxophones. But jazz is as diverse as the city of Philadelphia itself–and what most people don’t realize is that jazz lived, and continues to live, a vibrant life here. Many individuals might argue that jazz in Philadelphia is dead, but the life of Philly jazz is far from over.
Aircheck: Philly Jazz Isn’t Dead features interviews and commentary from renowned Philadelphian-born musicians like Steve Tirpak and Kenny Gamble discussing jazz and its continued relevance in today’s musical landscape.
The short documentary was produced by students Monica Mejia, Shaelyn McGovern, Phil Dupont, and Devin Southard.
Watch it on TUTV this Friday, September 18 at 12:30 and 8:30 p.m. on Comcast 50, Verizon 45 or online.

But You Considered Me tells the story and celebrates the work of Chosen 300 Ministries, a soup kitchen that hands out 100,000 meals a year to Philadelphia’s homeless. The short documentary also highlights the trajectory of one volunteer, Wendell, who went from dealing drugs and fostering a drug habit, to homeless, to helping the homeless.
Student producers Erin Kantner, Steph Mettler, Angel Morales, Xueer Ren and Alex Culyba made the documentary to show how volunteering one’s time to help others can change peoples’ lives, including that of volunteers themselves. MSP Professor Kristine Trever Weatherston served as Executive Producer for the film.
Watch online or on Comcast 50/Verizon 45 Friday, August 21 at 12:30 and 8:30 p.m.

16th and Philly reveals the never-before-told story of the rise and fall of one of the greatest playground basketball leagues in history. It takes place just blocks from Temple campus at 16th and Susquehanna, a basketball court in the heart of North Philly.
Commonly regarded as ‘Philadelphia’s Rucker Park’, the playground was familiar to the likes of Wilt Chamberlain, Hank Gathers, Doug Overton, Rodney “Hotrod” Odrick, Aaron “AO” Owens, and Bryant “Sadeye” Watson. “400-500 people on a Monday night” would show up to watch the neighborhood play. Wilson, Odrick, Owens appear in the documentary to help tell the story themselves. Directed by local media businessman Isaiah Nathaniel, 16th and Philly takes you from the park’s heyday to its present condition.
Tune in online or to Comcast 50/Verizon 45, Friday August 12 at 1 and 9 p.m. to hear all about Philly’s streetball history from the people who were there.
