PNTV is a student-produced newscast born from PhiladelphiaNeighborhoods.com, which aims to cover underserved parts of the city and take a look at the stories that effect its citizens. Hosts Aish Menon and Sarah Metts highlight the bigger and more controversial topics, including the new soda tax and how the Trump Administration’s immigration policy could impact Philadelphia, as well as the smaller and more intimate stories, including efforts to combat crime in the Grays Ferry and Port Richmond neighborhoods and a behind-the-scenes look at a trendy restaurant in Hunting Park.

New show about international students premieres on TUTV

The World at Temple

The World at Temple is the first and only TV talk show that’s aimed at international students at Temple University. For the pilot, which airs Wednesday, international students from all around the world come together to discuss their experiences at Temple and their lives at home. Ksenia Berestetska from Ukraine, Rithik Gangwani from India, Lei Zhao from China, and Ayah Alkhars from Kuwait share their stories. Zhao also demonstrates how to make dumplings.

Tune in to TUTV at 1 and 9 p.m. on Wednesday, May 31.

The season finale of TUTV’s hip hop culture talk show features a packed hour-long program including rap battles, a performance by Temple step group the Ladies of Elegance and a live studio performance by local songstress Chartel.

Bad Blood: The Border War that Triggered the Civil War

This 90-minute documentary portrays events leading up to the Civil War along the border of Kansas and Missouri during the years of 1854 through 1861. The story is told through the eyes of Missourians and Kansans. History buffs will appreciate this nuanced and detailed look at incidents that shaped America’s path.

What does it take to build high self esteem?

You may have heard the phrase “self esteem” before, but what does it mean, and how is positive self esteem sustained? On this new episode of Bouncing Back, Lisa Bien talks to Jullian Taylor, a senior and football player at Temple University, who works to inspire others and serve as a mentor to his younger teammates. He tells his story and how he started off as someone who was unsure of himself and not working to his full potential, but through hard work, he achieved healthy self esteem. To lend her expert knowledge, Monica Williams, a local life coach, also joins the set.

Independent film by blind Temple student to air Friday

Abandoned Heroes

“Abandoned Heroes” highlights how many American soldiers have returned home, only to face issues of homelessness, neglect by the Department of Veterans Affairs and other closed doors from the country they had put their lives on the line to serve. In particular, the film focuses on the story of Alyce Hutchinson and her son, Steven Campbell, who developed cancer after returning from Operation Dessert Storm, only to have the VA say there was nothing wrong with him.

Director David Block is legally blind but that hasn’t stopped him from completing seven  independent documentaries.  As a freelance journalist, he has had over 1,500 articles published in a variety of publications including the New York Times and Philadelphia Inquirer. Block is currently earning his Masters’ Degree at Temple., where the Journalism department recently awarded him the David the Lori Schipper Scholarship for Distinguished Achievement in Journalism.

Nailah Adam, a senior at Temple University, brings her grandmother’s fried chicken recipe to the set of Baker Dave Presents… Nailah describes how her grandmother came from Georgia and her mother settled in Philly to attend Temple. This authentically southern fried chicken recipe has been added to by successive generations in Nailah’s family, but it always begins by soaking the chicken in buttermilk overnight.

Media Inside Out: Mental Illness

A new episode of Media Inside Out exploring media representations of mental illness will air live on TUTV this Monday at 11:30 a.m.

From news reports about crimes committed by mentally unstable individuals, to characters such as “Crazy Eyes” in the series Orange is the New Black, those with mental illness are often portrayed as childlike, immature, unpredictable, unstable and dangerous. But are those portrayals true to life? Host Sherri Hope Culver investigates the way real and fictional people with mental illness appear in the media.

“A Broader View” on immigration

With guests Carmen Guerrero, a local activist and community leader, and Margaret O’Sullivan, Executive Director of the Philadelphia Nationalities Service Center, host Karen Turner takes this controversial issue on in a new episode of A Broader View.

Carmen Guerrero shares her story as an immigrant from Mexico, who arrived here after surviving a kidnapping and had to give up her business, her family and much more to live in safety. Margaret O’Sullivan brings her own experiences from her work in assisting immigrants get their footing in this country to put Carmen’s story in the larger context of the immigrant community in Philadelphia and immigration policy in the United States.

This episode asks if it is a city’s responsibility to provide digital access and talks to those who are attempting to address the technology gap.  Andrew Buss, the Director of Innovation Management at Office of Innovation & Technology for the City of Philadelphia; Jamie Bracey, Director of STEM Education, Outreach & Research at Temple University; and Juliet Fink Yates, Director of Education at Philadelphia FIGHT, join the set to highlight what’s being done now.
