Covid-19 Impact on Small Businesses

In a new episode of TUTV Community Forum, host Mydia Alonso takes a closer look at the impact COVID-19 has had on small businesses in the Philadelphia area. She is joined by the Director of the Small Business Development Center at the Fox School of Business, Maura Shenker. The Center’s mission is to help people in the community start businesses and provide aid as they grow, including one-on-one consulting, feasibility studies, and management strategies.

COVID-19 has been devastating to the small businesses in the community and elsewhere, and Maura and Mydia together examine what can be done to alleviate the burden that has been placed on them during the pandemic.

TUTV student-produced programming won two awards from the Intercollegiate Broadcasting System at this year’s IBS Awards!

TUTV’s student-produced entertainment talk show Temple Talk won “Best Variety Program”. Additionally, one of our station promos won “Best TV Station On-Air Promo”. “Don’t You Forget About TUTV” was produced by a student team from Klein College course “Advertising 3008: Television Promotion: On-Air, Online, On Social” and paid homage to Breakfast Club while promoting TUTV. New “Brand Mattters” premieres Monday

Brand Matters: March 15, 2021

Host Steve McLean joins John Duffin, owner of Duffin Media, to discuss the topic of authenticity in marketing. These days, younger consumers are more inclined to engage with brands that align with their values, which has altered the approach many companies’ marketing strategies. During this program, Steve and John take a look at examples where campaigns failed or succeeded in cultivating an authentic audience connection.

Host Deja Parker returns for another edition of her program North Philly Now. In this episode, hear from Temple graduate researchers Nicole Henninger and Michelle Chiu, who give insights into how technology has shaped our experiences during the pandemic. Later, retired educator Carol Parkinson-Hall joins to discuss issues facing minority communities regarding education. Lastly, we hear from the owner of Custom Arts Studios, Keisha Whatley, who shares her experience being a business owner during COVID.

A New “A Broader View” premieres Tuesday

A Broader View: Episode 28

A new episode of A Broader View examines what we could realistically do as a nation to unify after the Capitol siege.

Professor Karen Turner is joined by Dr. Tiffenia Archie, Dr. Leslie Wilson, and Reverend Damaris Walker to discuss the current political climate in the United States, and in particular the breaching of the Capital Building on January 6th, the social justice protests throughout the past year, and how can we hold people accountable while working to achieve national healing and unity.

Dr. Archie serves as the Assistant Vice President of Institutional Diversity, Equity, Advocacy and Leadership (IDEAL) at Temple University; Dr. Leslie Willson is the Associate Dean of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences at Montclair State University; and Reverend Damaris Walker is the Pastor of Miller Memorial Baptist Church in North Philadelphia.

Look back on the 1918 flu from the year 2020

A 2020 Perspective on the 1918 Flu

Tune in to TUTV to take a look back on the 1918 flu in 2020. Professor Hilary Iris Lowe, Abigail Gruber, and Charlie Hersh will discuss their research and work on the history of the 1918 flu in Philadelphia. This work came out of a class Professor Lowe held in fall 2017, but is especially relevant today.

Charlie Hersh received both their MA in Public History and BA in Religion from Temple University. Their master’s thesis was titled “Sourcing Liberty: Using Artifacts to Teach about Religious Freedom.” Hersh has worked in a variety of Philadelphia’s museums including the National Museum of American Jewish History, the African American Museum in Philadelphia, and Carpenters’ Hall.

Abby Gruber is currently in the History PhD program at Temple University, where she focuses in Early America, Gender, the Atlantic World, and Public History. She received both her MA in History and BSEd in Secondary Social Studies Education from Millersville University near Lancaster, PA. During her time at Temple, Gruber served as the Allen Davis Fellow in Public History. Her fellowship allowed her to work on various projects, including the 1918 Spanish Flu project and the “Inequality in Bronze” Dinah Memorial Project at Stenton.

Hilary Iris Lowe is an associate professor in the History Department and has been at Temple since 2012. She teaches courses in U.S. cultural history, public history, and American studies. As public historian and teacher, she endeavors to engage students with the research projects to which she contributes.

Dr. Molefi Kete Asante leads the discussion during this installment of Race in the Race, concerning on politics during the pandemic and issues of race in the upcoming Presidential, national, state, and local elections. For 13 years running, the Libraries and the Faculty Senate Committee on the Status of Faculty of Color have co-hosted this engaging series of panels on timely topics, featuring faculty from across the university.

Temple Update’s student reporters will return to TUTV beginning this week to cover the latest in campus news, the pandemic, and Temple sports in addition to the weekly forecast. Starting February 18, watch it live every Thursday at 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. on Comcast 50 and Verizon 45 within Philadelphia city limits or online everywhere.

If you missed the John Chaney Memorial Service last week, catch it on TUTV this Tuesday, February 16 at noon and 8 p.m. and again on Sunday, February 21 at 1 and 9 p.m.

Temple University held memorial services on Monday, February 8 for the late Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame coach John Chaney. Chaney died on January 29, 2021. He was 89.

Chaney was the head coach at Temple for 24 years. In twenty-three of those years, Temple played in the postseason tournaments including 17 NCAA tournament appearances. Under his leadership, the Owls made five trips to the Final Eight (1988, 1991, 1993, 1999 and 2001). He completed his coaching at Temple with a 516-252 record.

Media Inside Out premieres new live episode Monday

Media Inside Out: Digital Literacy for the Elderly

In a new episode of Media Inside Out, host Sherri Hope Culver highlights the issue of senior citizens navigating our increasingly digital world. As society becomes more and more dependent on digital services, there must be an effort to create digital inclusion for older adults.

To help tackle this subject, Sherri invites guests Tobey Dichter, CEO of Generations on Line, a non-profit which helps seniors learn to use the internet and digital devices, and Loretta Geller, a senior citizen who is as adept at using the web as any millennial.

Special edition of Temple Athletics will honor Coach Chaney

Tune in to Temple Athletics this Saturday for a look back on the life and legacy of Basketball Hall of Fame coach John Chaney, who passed away on Friday, January 29, 2021 at the age of 89.

Joining host Alexis Beckett will be special guests Fran Dunphy, Acting Director of Athletics and former Head Coach who succeeded Chaney; Jason Ivey, Director of Player Development for Temple Men’s Basketball and former player under Chaney; and John Baum, a Hall of Fame Temple player and radio analyst for Temple Basketball.
