Action News celebrates Temple University’s next generation of journalists with a behind-the-scenes look at its nationally recognized student newscast.
Temple University Television’s Temple Update received a special spotlight from 6abc Action News, celebrating the student-produced newscast’s historic achievement as the recipient of Temple University’s first-ever National Student Edward R. Murrow Award.
In a feature produced by Action News photojournalist Todd Haas, viewers were taken behind the scenes to see the dedication, teamwork and professionalism that go into producing Temple Update each week.
The story featured students Christian Lee, and Shayla Cotterman, who shared what it means to work in a newsroom environment where they report, write, produce and deliver a live newscast while preparing for careers in television journalism.
“It feels like real life. Like I’m doing the job before I even have the job,” said Lee.
The feature also highlighted the significance of the Murrow Award and the program’s commitment to preparing students for the professional world.
“We’re trying to close the gap between the classroom and the professional world,” said TUTV General Manager Joe Schreiber. “And with Temple Update, that gap’s almost non-existent.”
The Action News anchors also recognized longtime Temple Update Executive Producer Peter Jaroff, a former 6abc producer who helped guide generations of Temple journalists.
The segment concluded with enthusiastic congratulations from the Action News team, who described the students as their future colleagues—and perhaps even future bosses.
