On Friday, March 21, the Annenberg Hall Atrium was full of energy as students, educators, and media professionals came together for the 13th Annual Claire Smith Center for Sports Media Summit at Temple University. The event, hosted by the Claire Smith Center for Sports Media, gave students a closer look at what it’s like to work in the fast-paced world of sports journalism and broadcasting.
John DiCarlo, who serves as the managing director of the Claire Smith Center and oversees student media at Klein College, kicked off the day by encouraging high school students in attendance to explore Temple’s Pre-College Workshops. These programs offer a chance to dive into media and journalism before starting college—an ideal way for aspiring storytellers and broadcasters to get a head start.
Professors Claire Smith, KLN’79, and Matt Fine were also on hand to announce some exciting news: starting in August 2025, students can major in sports media at Temple. It’s a big step forward for Klein College, allowing students to focus their studies on the growing field of sports media, from reporting and writing to live production and digital storytelling.
The panel features a group of accomplished Temple alumni who’ve built impressive careers in the industry. Eagles Insider Dave Spadaro, KLN’87; Fox 29 anchor Breland Moore, KLN’14; NFL draft and Eagles analyst Fran Duffy, KLN’11; and Eagles beat reporters EJ Smith, KLN’16, and Bo Wulf all took the stage to talk about their experiences covering Philadelphia sports. Their stories were candid, insightful, and full of advice for students hoping to follow in their footsteps.
