KLN ’79 Alumna Claire Smith is a trailblazer in sports journalism who now educates the next generation of journalists at Temple University as the founding executive director of the Claire Smith Center for Sports Media. Claire has been a pioneer within the baseball community for 40 years. She was the first female to cover a major-league baseball beat full-time, covering the New York Yankees for the Hartford Courant for half a decade before becoming the second national baseball columnist in the country.

On July 11, 2023, she was presented with the Associated Press Sports Editors Red Smith Award,  which is given annually by the APSE to a writer or editor who has made significant contributions to sports journalism and is considered the industry’s highest honor. She’s the first Black woman to win the award, the sixth woman, and the fourth Black journalist to receive the honor.
