How does the media portray “The Other” in our society?

The media plays a very big part in portraying and defining what is considered normal or typical, as well as what is seen as outside of mainstream, aka “The Other.” These portrayals can help cement stereotypes and labels, which ultimately shape our beliefs about who should be doing what and who shouldn’t be.

Sherri Hope Culver tackles this delicate subject in a new episode of her show Media Inside Out, premiering Wednesday. She talks to Jacob Bender, Executive Director of the Pennsylvania chapter of the Council on American Islamic Relations, about several issues in the current media landscape, including the upcoming primary elections and Al Jazeera America.
