New student documentary uncovers toxic waste sites in Philly

Superfundland

Superfundland highlights the alarming number of areas in and surrounding the city of Philadelphia that are contaminated by hazardous waste and pollution, known as Superfund sites. It will air on TUTV Friday, January 29 at 12:30 and 8:30 p.m.

Superfund sites are often massive and can remain toxic and unsafe for years while companies and the government battle over responsibility. As these entities face off in the courtroom, the environment and humans surrounding the sites suffer.

This short documentary was made by Temple students and features commentary from Dr. Barry Vacker, a Media Studies & Production professor; David Streetsmith, an environmental consultant; Dr. Kathi Knight, who specializes in environmental science; Dr. Laura Toran, a hydrogeologist; and Stephanie Branche, an environmental scientist for the EPA. It was produced and directed by Dan Kurtz, Christina Betz, John Tarquinio, and Jesse Roehrer.
