Having a learning disability can be a struggle. These challanges are exacerbated by other people’s expectations concerning your ability to be able to accomplish common tasks, like reading, staying focused and listening. Temple alumnus Grant Schmidt has a lot of experience dealing with issues like these. He was diagnosed with Auditory Processing Disorder (APD), which causes difficulty in receiving, remembering, understanding, and using auditory information.
But after being diagnosed, Grant chose not to avoid situations where his disorder would hinder him; instead, he challenged his limitations in order to overcome them. He works in the film industry and has participated in theater productions despite his disability. Grant provides his point of view on what has helped him work through these obstacles and what hasn’t.
Vanessa Dash, Student Services Coordinator for Disability Resources at Temple University, also joins the set to provide information on what faculty can do for students with disabilities and what the University is prepared to provide.
