His Girl Friday

Craziness abounds in this classic re-working of the original 1930 film version of the Ben Hecht and Charles MacArthur uproarious newspaper farce, The Front Page. Hildy is played with a neat twist by Rosalind Russell, who makes the mistake of returning to the office to tell her former husband and boss, editor Walter Burns (Cary Grant), that she is leaving the newspaper business to marry an insurance salesman (Ralph Bellamy). Knowing “once a reporter always a reporter,” the coniving Burns tricks Hildy into being the star reporter on the politically motivated execution of Earl Williams (John Qualen). The dialogue is hilarious, as the Burns/Hildy anything-to-get-a-story sparring is overtaken by the corrupt behavior of the mayor (Clarence Kolb) and Sheriff Hartwell (Gene Lockhart). Their attempt to expedite the hanging to help the mayor get re-elected backfires when Burns and Hildy make “Front Page” news out of the Mayor’s attempt to delay the reprieve which has been delivered from the Governor. This screwball comedy classic deservedly has the reputation of being “the fastest farce on celluloid.”
