A Star Is Born

The original production of the classic Hollywood love story about two movie stars who cross paths, one on the way up and the other on the way down. The story, one of the best of its kind in dissecting what it is like to make it in tinsel town, is so enduring that it has been remade twice, the second time in 1954 as a vehicle for Judy Garland and again in 1974 as a vehicle for Barbara Streisand. Not just the orginal, but the best of all versions, this one stars Janet Gaynor in the role of small town girl Esther Blodgett who dreams of making it big in Hollywood and does, thanks to Norman Maine (Fredric March) who discovers her. Not only does he help get her first screen test, but he makes her a star, then marries her only to watch her eclipse him in her rise to stardom. Most important though, is that this is a moving love story, for Esther really loves Norman, in spite of his drunken behavior and the bad things people say about him. (1937)
