Politics

This episode of A Broader View covers topics surrounding the larger issue of voting, including voter ID laws, politicians who lose elections, voting in city elections, and young voters.

First, we take a look at a side of politics that isn’t often talked about: the losing side. Nicole Plaksen explores this topic with two different levels of politics, student government and city council. Ifeoma Ezeugwu ran for Temple Student government and lost; Andrew Toy was defeated running for a seat in city council. Together they explore the complex process of garnering votes and holding an audience, along with personal doubts, and how money is undoubtedly a big factor.

Kirsten Lewis hosts a segment with Temple students’ input on whether carrying ID is necessary and if it should be required at the voting poll. Lewis invites political science professor, Conrad Weiler, to discuss the controversial topic of voter ID laws.

Deneia Washington continues in the same vein as Lewis by addressing voting, specifically within Philadelphia. Washington welcomes Jim Saksa to the program, a treasurer for Young Involve Philadelphia, an organization that seeks out young voters across the city to inform them of the political climate and encouraging them to cast their ballot. Saksa talks about the ways in which he tries to engage young adults and the current flaws within the marketing of politics that discourages voters.

Andrew McDevitt invites Kevin Glasson from the Temple Student Government to investigate how, and what, young politically involved voters are speaking about. The two address how political image and campaigns have allowed young voter turnout to increase, citing the past two Obama campaigns.

Wrapping up the program, the hosts convene to have a thorough discussion of what they took away from their respective interviews and voice their opinions about topics discussed from one another’s segments.
